Manage Connectivity
[ Theory and Background | Vocabulary | Teacher Notes | Extra Resources | Video Script ] (Charles)
Outline
- Using the internet first means connecting to bandwidth (an internet connection). Whether you are using dial-up, dsl, cable or wi-fi, there are several things you will need to establish internet connectivity. These are:
- a valid IP address
- a working Ethernet or wi-fi adapter;
- a correctly configured tcp/ip ; tcp/ip is the computer language, called a protocol, used to communicate over an ip network
- access to dns (domain name server)
- access to a gateway router (router connected to the internet)
- Notice that your bandwidth is a separate issue from your browser (the application you use to access web content). Your browser will use whatever internet connection is available to access web pages, and frankly doesn’t care what type of internet connection you have, as long as it is up and working.
- On Windows 2000/XP, you can use two tools to check and troubleshoot your connectivity. These are “Ipconfig” and “ping”.
